Educator Spotlight: Meet Ayako — From Restaurant Roots to Childcare Magic

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Ayako, whose journey into early childhood education is as unique as it is inspiring.

With years of experience running a restaurant, Ayako discovered the perfect way to blend her passion for working with children with her love for food. “I’ve always been passionate about working with children, and with my background in running a restaurant, I saw an opportunity to combine my skills and make a real difference in the childcare industry,” she shared. That balance of heart and skill ultimately led her to the role of a childcare chef.

What keeps Ayako motivated each day? The children, of course. Watching them grow, learn, and approach life with curiosity is something she never takes for granted. “Seeing them grow every day inspires me to keep learning too, it’s a win-win!”

Her time as an educator has shaped the way she works in the kitchen. Though not a formally trained chef, Ayako’s food service and hygiene experience, combined with her understanding of children’s routines, allows her to create smooth, enjoyable mealtimes. Communication is key for her: “I know sticking to the routine helps educators, so I always communicate with the team and welcome feedback.”

The children have taught Ayako plenty along the way, mainly how to stay fearless, curious, and creative. And one of the best parts of her day? Serving meals on time and knowing she’s helping her team. “It’s the best feeling when the team tells me I’ve made their job easier!”

As for favourites, fried rice and baked pumpkin top the children’s list, with many little ones eagerly asking for seconds. And the moments that make her smile? Staff popping by the kitchen to say hello or children proudly showing her their toys and drawings over the counter. “It’s the little things that make my day.”

Ayako even has a hidden talent, crafting! While she doesn’t get many chances to show it off, she loves creating decorative flower shapes from carrots and cucumbers.

When it comes to working with Save Our Service, Ayako says, “I love the flexibility of being a casual worker, and the SOS team has been amazing. They’re always there to support me, and it’s great to feel trusted and valued.”

We are so grateful to have Ayako as part of the SOS family,  bringing dedication, creativity, and heart to every meal and every moment.
