Objective:
To engage children’s senses and curiosity through hands-on exploration of a variety of textures, building vocabulary, fine motor skills, and sensory awareness.

Materials Needed:

  • A shallow tray or large table covered with a cloth
  • Natural textures: pinecones, shells, leaves, bark, smooth pebbles
  • Soft textures: cotton balls, fabric swatches, felt
  • Rough textures: sandpaper, corrugated cardboard
  • Squishy textures: playdough, sponge pieces
  • Small baskets or bowls for sorting
  • Magnifying glasses (optional)

How to Set It Up:

  1. Arrange each texture type in separate bowls or sections of the tray.
  2. Create labels or picture cards showing each item’s name.
  3. Invite children to explore freely — touching, holding, squeezing, and describing each texture.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Sensory Development: Children use their sense of touch to identify differences and similarities.
  • Language Skills: Encourages descriptive words like “bumpy,” “smooth,” “scratchy,” “soft.”
  • Cognitive Development: Supports categorisation and sorting.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Handling different-sized objects improves grip and coordination.

Extension Ideas:

  • Create a texture collage using a variety of materials and glue.
  • Play a “mystery bag” guessing game — hide objects and have children identify them by touch only.
  • Go on a “texture walk” around the outdoor area to collect new items.

Safety Notes:

  • Supervise closely to ensure no small items are put in mouths.
  • Check for sharp edges or splinters.
