At Save Our Service, we understand that starting out or even continuing as a casual educator in the early childhood sector can bring up a lot of questions. Whether you’re brand new to the industry or a seasoned professional looking for flexible work, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from educators just like you.
1. What does a casual educator do?
A casual educator works on a flexible, as-needed basis in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings. Your role might involve stepping in to cover permanent staff who are on leave, assisting during busy periods, or supporting specific programs across different age groups. Duties may include supervising children, planning or facilitating activities, following daily routines, and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all children in your care.
2. How does shift allocation work?
Shift availability depends on centre needs and your availability. Through our platform, Entire OnHire, you can set your preferred days, times, and locations. When a centre requests a shift that matches your profile, you’ll receive a notification—simply accept or decline based on your schedule. The more flexible and responsive you are, the more work opportunities you’ll likely receive.
3. Do I need qualifications to be a casual educator?
Yes. To work as a casual educator in early childhood settings, you typically need one of the following:
- Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
- Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
- Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (for Early Childhood Teachers)
You’ll also need current certifications such as a Working with Children Check (WWCC), First Aid, CPR, Asthma and Anaphylaxis training.
4. Can I choose where I want to work?
Absolutely. You can nominate your preferred travel. Our system matches you with shifts based on these preferences. However, we do recommend being available to travel some distances as you are likely to pick up more shifts.
5. What if I need to cancel a shift?
We understand that life happens. If you’re unable to attend a shift, notify us as soon as possible through the app or by contacting our support team. Giving as much notice as possible helps us support the centre and maintain our professional reputation.
6. Will I receive professional development or support?
Yes! We’re proud to offer our own Learning Management System (LMS) that gives you access to relevant industry training and development opportunities. We also regularly check in with our educators to provide support, gather feedback, and help you grow professionally.
8. Can casual work lead to permanent employment?
Definitely! Many of our casual educators are offered permanent roles after making a great impression during their shifts. Casual work is a fantastic way to experience different settings, find your ideal workplace culture, and build strong relationships with centre teams.
9. Do I need to prepare anything before each shift?
Make sure you wear appropriate, comfortable clothing (including enclosed shoes), bring photo ID, and review any centre-specific notes provided via the app. Arrive on time, with a positive attitude and willingness to jump in and support wherever needed.
