From Hospitality to Early Childhood Kitchens
What inspired you to make the move from the hospitality industry into early childhood education?
“I needed work that fit around my family’s needs. My son is an elite swimmer and trains over 20 hours a week, so getting him to the pool and gym sessions takes up a lot of my time. Early childhood gave me the flexibility I needed while still doing work I love.”
How does working as a childcare chef differ from your experience in hospitality kitchens?
“The portion sizes are much smaller, but the basic principles are the same – make great tasting food that meets the needs of your customers.”
What do you enjoy most about cooking for children?
“Many kitchens are open for children to see, and they’re always so curious about what I’m cooking. It’s fun to see their excitement and questions!”
How have the children or educators influenced your approach to cooking in this new environment?
“Childcare is such a friendly and positive environment. Like many kitchens, there are dietary requirements, allergies, likes, and dislikes, which challenge me to make food that tastes great while meeting everyone’s needs.”
What’s a dish or snack that’s always a hit with the kids?
“Birthday cakes are always a winner!”
What was the biggest challenge you faced when transitioning from hospitality to childcare, and what did you learn from it?
“Adjusting to much smaller portion sizes were tricky at first, and they can vary from centre to centre. I’ve learned to monitor leftovers and adjust for the next meal accordingly.”
How do you like to unwind after a busy day in the kitchen?
“Spending time with my family and watching a good show on TV.”
Fun fact or hidden talent your team might not know about:
“I’m obsessed with the NFL and watch as many games as I can. My team is the Dallas Cowboys!”
What do you enjoy about working with Save Our Service?
“I love the flexibility to choose my own shifts, and the childcare centres are always so glad to see me when I arrive. It makes the work feel even more rewarding.”
